Walking by Faith: The Journey

I am one of few that are able to say that my career is intertwined and a part of my personal ministry. Some may call it luck, others may call it great life choices; I like to call it divine providence.  I have loved every minute of being a nurse.  I don't think I could go back and count all of the ways I've been blessed over the last 6 years.

As I look back and reflect on my life - where God has taken me, how He has taken me, and why He has taken me to certain places is no short story.  He has taken me from state to state, city to city, and on multiple occasions to other parts of the world. A good majority of the journey, I am ashamed to report, have been to places I had no desire to go to.  However, at the end of the day, God has shown me over and over again His divine leading is always with purpose even though I fail to see it in the moment. He has also shown me that life's most richest blessings have been found in the places I desired to go the least.

Along the way I have learned many lessons, big and small. I am so grateful for the experiences and opportunities that He has provided me; both in my career, and in my personal ministry. I am undeservingly blessed by the miracles He has granted for the advancement of my career/ministry at the University of Pittsburgh. While we all have a general idea of what comes next, we never fully know what the future holds, but we can trust who holds the future. Today, and everyday, I choose to walk by faith, practicing patience, while doing and pursuing everything for God's glory. Never mind the fact that I am not always the most graceful at it. I lack patience and faith on a good day. Trust me friends, it doesn't always look pretty from my end, as I'm sure some of you could testify. But, I will stand tall, and claim the promise of Philippians 1:6, being confident that He who started a good work in me will finish it until the day of completion. Hallelujah!

Life and some of it's details...

Today is Father's Day! I am sad that I am on the west coast and missing the chance to spend the day with my dad. I am headed home next on July 8th, and I will be able to spend some quality time with him. He is going to help me move into my apartment in Pittsburgh!  I am so thankful that God has blessed me with an amazing father. He has been a wonderful example of our Heavenly Father and has been there for me from the beginning. Life hasn't always been pretty, but he has been a faithful and constant supporter, for that I am grateful. I will forever be your little girl, Dad. I love you with my whole heart, all the way to the moon and back!

Living life in Loma Linda has still been quite the experience for me. June 8th, I started my contract at Children's Hospital of Orange County. Working night shift has presented it's own set of challenges, but has proven to be a blessing in disguise. It is nice to commute to Orange County, California from Loma Linda against the grain of traffic; going into work at 7pm and coming home from work at 7am. My body doesn't like the night shift adjustment so much, and sometimes driving home can get scary. Most of you who know me, know that I fall asleep at the wheel while driving after a full night of sleep. YIKES! That being said, this contract is only for a short while and sometimes I am lucky enough to chat with some special people on the ride home in the morning and that helps a lot.

I am learning all over again that...

And that post work grunge is a legit condition.
Like I said, "It ain't always pretty here folks!"

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of accompanying two of Loma Linda's finest young ladies (Skyla and Briella) to Market Night. They showed me what it was all about and I had a blast.

 Silly Faces

Happy Faces

Sad Faces

As most of you know, I love people. I love the study of people and our interactions with each other, especially in relationships; with God, each other, and romantic relationships. Sometimes, I get a little carried away reading, thinking, and sharing.

Recently, I read this article called, Love is a Choice, by James Michael Sama (who wrote my previous blog post or "re:blog") and found it to be incredibly profound. The article talks about love as a choice, and not just a euphoric spontaneous feeling. Feelings come by day and change by night.

In a book called The Sacred Search I read this, "You could marry for money, health, or good looks but keep in mind that none of those things are certain to remain. Character is the surest thing. You don’t know what the future holds, but you can know the kind of character you’re marrying. I’ve seen infatuation lead far more people astray than into satisfying marriages. I’ve seen people fail to pursue a relationship, even though they respected, admired, and loved another person, because there didn’t seem to be an over-the-top, make-my-knees-weak feeling or sexual chemistry."

When I think about it deeper, I think of Jesus and His character. I think of the love that He has for us. I am so grateful that while we were still sinners He chose to love us despite the fact that we are undeserving, and despite the fact that He should have just walked away. He defined our value and counted us worthy! You. Me. Hallelujah!  Doesn't that just make your heart want to sing?! Mine does.

I am so grateful that He chose to love us through the hurt, the pain, and the suffering. I am so grateful that in the Garden of Gethsemane through to His crucifixion, He didn't make any decision based on how He felt. My human mind cannot even begin to wrap my head around everything that He felt. The cogent truth: He chose to love us. Now we can love Him, and love in His way because He first loved us.

I hope you enjoy the article it as much as I did.

Reblog: Things You Should Expect When Dating a Strong Woman

James Sama has a ton of great blog posts out there that I would happily share on my blog, however this one takes the cake or a cake.  All points are profound, I especially love the "Dos" at the end, I believe numbers 8-12. They are solid truth.

Things You Should Expect When Dating a Strong Woman

"You will never be happier than when you are with a strong woman, because she lives her life with a burning desire to make the best of it. She loves deeply and will motivate you to become the best possible version of yourself – while remaining the same man she fell for in the first place.
Do not shy away from strong women, do not be intimidated by their passion for life. Instead, be excited that you have found your teammate. You have found your partner in crime.
You have found your equal."
Yes!

This is also a great article I read too...
There are a lot of pearls that we as women can learn from reading this.

Blessings in the Routine

This morning as part of my worship I was playing "In His Time" on the piano, a well known song I often sing in a routine manner, hardly thinking about what I'm actually singing.  However, this morning I couldn't help but stop and reflect on the lyrics themselves.  They are so profound!

In His time, In His time
He makes all things beautiful, in His time
Lord please show me everyday, as you're teaching me Your way
That you do just what you say, In your time

I know that in the past and currently I've struggled/struggle with the concept of waiting, walking by faith, trusting, and patience. It is so easy for me to become distracted developing my own plan for the way things will go in my life. I refuse to 'let go' of the reins for fear that if I 'let go' things won't work out the way I want them to, or the way I believe they should. This is where I am profoundly wrong. Always, not just sometimes, I find that my own plans leave me utterly disappointed or my own plans would have left me permanently disappointed. I often find myself saying, "Lord, if I just trusted you a little bit more," or "Lord, if I only had a little more faith in You, I would have been able to walk by faith not knowing the future and still have been fully confident in it." Even as I type this out I think it is easier to talk about trust, patience, and walking by faith than it is carrying it out in our personal lives. The good news is when we examine our lives or when I examine my life; where I've come from and where I've been, God has turned the things I wanted to do the least into the biggest blessings of my life.

That's just it!

Sometimes, I think we, in our limited human minds, fail to see the big picture. We are fixated on the present and what we want at the current moment. We want what we want and we want it now!  We fail to look past our own selfishness to see the endless possibilities and beauty that is awaiting around the corner. We are the product of a society that has been spoiled with instant gratification. If we want something we get it. If we need to fix something we fix it. What happens when we let go of the burdens and anxiety that come along with doing, fixing, worrying, and hand it over to God?

We are flooded with an incredible peace that wasn't there before.

"You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You."
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV

So, you have a situation that isn't exactly the way you want it to be right now. That's okay.  God promises to make ALL things beautiful in His time. The ugliness of the situation you see today will be the beautiful situation you see in the future.

As far as life goes...

I'm in Loma Linda, California. I have been here for a little over a week and I'm overwhelmed with all of the activities and things that are going on in this little town! For those of you who know me, that is no easy feat! In my older years of life, I have become a little more introverted than I used to be.  I have actually had to build in some personal "alone" time into my calendar so I can keep up! There has been a bible study every night, I have joined the Advent Hope running club (Chub Club), there is a backpacking trip this weekend, countless outreach opportunities, and tons of people!

Since leaving Central California (Fresno) and Valley Children's Hospital, I have been on a two week break/vacation which has allowed me to become acclimated to the area and all of happenings.  I start my next assignment at Children's Hospital of Orange County (PICU) on Monday, June 8. I am excited to get back to work!

I was recently on the east coast at the end of May to attend Megan and Keith's wedding. Megan was my college roommate at Jefferson in Philadelphia.  It is a blessing to still have her friendship. I was happy to have been able to attend and be there to show my support for her and Keith at the start of this next chapter of their lives. I just love weddings! In addition to the wedding, I was also home to work at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.  I fly back every 8 weeks to keep my per diem status there! Call me crazy, but they are the finest PICU team I have ever had the privilege of working with. In September, I will be picking up hours more frequently since I will be living back in Pennsylvania. I cannot begin to tell you all the excitement I have inside surrounding the idea of working with that team again. When I am home, I always wear my HMC badge with pride.

Here in Loma Linda, I am staying with these cool cats (April and Thad) and their beautiful children, Skyla, Briella, and Sterling.  I am loving every minute.  I praise God for their openness and flexibility! They are truly a blessing.

My sister was recently on vacation in Las Vegas, Nevada.  She had my mom's time share moved there for a week.  I was able to drive over and hang out with her and a dear old friend (Marie) for a few days.  We were able to see the Hoover Dam, and went on the "High Roller" (the huge ferris wheel) that over looks the city.  As far as vacation spots go, Vegas isn't really my kind of scene and I have zero desire to go back, however on this occasion it did have one thing to offer, my sister, and it was great spending some time with her.

It is my hope that it won't be so long from this update to my next... sometimes I'm guilty of letting my blog fall idle.

Until then keep shining for Jesus!
